Acupuncture/Chiropractic/ Cold Laser

Acupuncture

Acupuncture points are based on meridians throughout the body. Very small, sterile, disposable needles are inserted into very precise points. These needles cause a release of endogenous opioids, endorphins, serotonins, and norepinephrine.  The needles are typically painless, but can sometimes feel like a small pin prick. Some patients do not react, others may. Some patients will fall asleep during the treatment.  The needles are typically left in for 20-30 minutes.

Types of Acupuncture:

  • Dry needling: The insertion of sterile, disposable needles into precise points

  • Aqua-acupuncture: The administration of Vitamin B12, or sometimes another liquid, into acupuncture points to create longer lasting effects.

  • Electro-acupuncture: A mild current is applied to certain needles for a longer lasting effect.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is based on the idea that disease (dis-ease) results from an imbalance in the nervous system. A chiropractic adjustment corrects the subluxation and restores a proper functioning nervous system so that the body can heal itself and function at its full potential.

The adjustment comprises of adjusting subluxations in the spine, pelvis, and extremities. These are quick, gentle movements. Some patients might be sore in certain areas, so the adjustment could be slightly uncomfortable for a moment.

Depending on the age and health status of the pet, they may feel immediately better, or they could be tired or sore for a bit. This is similar to soreness that can be experienced after a massage.

Cold Laser

Low-level light therapy, or cold laser therapy, is most often used for pain control and tissue healing. This photo biostimulation causes a revitalization and reactivation of the body’s healing capacity, or innate intelligence.

This is completely painless and the patient may feel a slight tingle. Treatments typically last 2-6 minutes.  During the treatment we ask that only one owner sit with patient. Dr. Nagel will ask the owner to wear protective eye wear. If you’re not comfortable with this Dr. Nagel can do the treatment by herself as well.

What to expect

For dogs & Cats: During the initial appointment we will review of your pet’s medical history, I’ll perform a physical exam, we will discuss your goals, and we’ll develop a treatment plan. I will likely recommend supplement & diet modifications/additions as well. My goal is for owners to feel completely informed & comfortable with our plan. The initial appointment takes up to 90 minutes.

Some pets have immediate improvements after the first session especially with acute conditions. However, it may takes appointments every 1-2 weeks for about 4 treatments for owners to see an improvement. For chronic conditions some pets may need maintenance treatments every 4-6 weeks or so. Follow up appointments typically take about 45-60 minutes. If you’re interested in chiropractic only, then the first appointment can take up to 60 minutes and follow up appointments are typically 20-30 minutes.

Some pets relax for the treatments, others can be a bit more nervous or restless. I recommend having some of their favorite treats, a kong, frozen peanut butter, a treat mat, etc ready. I do not employ an assistant, so owner’s assistance will be needed during appointments. If your pet is fearful or aggressive please let me know ahead of time so we can discuss this and whether treatment will be possible.

I like to review pertinent medical history (including radiographs) prior to our appointment, so before the appointment I ask that you have them emailed to janvetcare@gmail.com.

For horses: During the initial appointment I’ll want to watch them walk and trot on a straight away and perhaps on the lunge depending on the history. The initial appointment can up to 60 minutes. Some horses will have immediate improvement after the first session especially with acute conditions. However, it may take 3-4 sessions every 2-4 weeks to see an improvement. For maintenance, I typically recommend follow up appointments every 4-6 weeks, or when a decline is noted. Follow up appointments take up to 30-45 minutes. It is recommended to give your horse 24-48 hours off, then light riding only for a day or so before resuming a normal work load. If your horse is sensitive to hoof trims and/or vaccines, it is recommended to schedule these appointments at least 1 week apart from these therapies so that your horse receives the full benefit of treatments.
